– Üniversiteniz her yıl büyüyor. Bunun sebebi ne, öğrencinin ilgisi mi?
İstanbul Aydın Üniversitesi ilk seneden beri uygulamalı eğitim yapıyor. Yani biz öğrenciyi bilgiye dokunduruyoruz. Öğrencilerimiz her hafta burada aldığı teorik eğitimi, anlaşmalı iş yerlerine giderek pratiğe dönüştürüyor.
– Uygulamalı eğitimde lisans veya önlisans farkı var mı?
Hayır hiç fark etmiyor aynı uygulamayı, Hukuk fakültesinde de İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler fakültesinde de Sağlık Bilimlerinde de Güzel Sanatlarda da devam ettiriyoruz. Son iki yılda bu uygulamayı daha farklı bir boyuta taşıdık. Sektör meclisleri oluşturduk. Örneğin takı tasarım bölümünde hem kuyumculardan hem de akademisyenlerden oluşan bir meclis var. Bunlar 6 ayda bir araya gelerek öğrencilerimizle alakalı bir geri besleme almamızı sağlıyor. Yerel düşünmüyoruz. Şu anda İstanbul Aydın Üniversitesi’nin 2000 yabancı öğrencisi, 250 yabancı hocası var. Fildişi’nden tutun da Kore’ye Şili’ye kadar 74 ülkeden öğrencimiz bulunuyor. Her yıl 500 öğrenci ve akademisyenimizi yurt dışına gönderiyoruz.
– Yurt dışı desteği öğrencilere ek bir maliyet getiriyor mu?
Cüzi maliyet getiren uygulamalar da var, hiç maliyet getirmeyen de… Mesela Erasmus bütçesi yeterli değilse üniversite takviye yapıyor. Yaz okulunu tamamıyla üniversite karşılıyor. Her öğrencinin bütçesine göre bir yurt dışı programımız bulunuyor.
– “En çok öğrenci alan vakıf üniversitesiyiz” diyorsunuz. Öğrenci sizi niye tercih ediyor? Ücret mi düşük?
İstanbul Aydın Üniversitesi’nin ücretleri Türkiye’deki vakıf üniversiteleri arasında ilk 5’te. Ücretlerimiz düşük değil. 2013’te üniversitemiz 160 bin tercih aldı. Burası her alanda yaşayan bir üniversite. Seçtiğimiz bölümler sektörün ihtiyacı olan bölümler yani öğrencilerimiz açıkta kalmıyor. Dünyanın ilk 500’ünde yer alan üniversitelerle anlaşma içindeyiz yaklaşık 400 üniversite ile iş birliği yapıyoruz. 14 araştırma merkezimiz var. Üniversiteler insan yetiştirmek zorunda, ülkenin milli, manevi ve tarihi değerleri, bunları bilgiyle harmanlayıp öğrencisine sunuyorsa üniversite görevini yapıyor demektir. Her yıl 800 üzerinde etkinlik yapıyoruz yani biz öğrenciyi sosyal ve kültürel olarak da yetiştiriyoruz. Burada siyaset yapamazsınız. Ne öğrencisi ne hocası. Yani bir velinin çocuğunu rahatlıkla teslim edebileceği bir üniversiteyiz.
– 179 üniversite var. Sayıyla birlikte rekabet de arttı. Sizce bu sistem ne kadar daha devam edecek?
Üniversiteler rekabet etmek zorundadır. Aksi halde başarı olmaz. 40 milyon kişi eğitim görüyor. Böyle bir sayı için olması gereken üniversite sayısı 250’dir. Daha çok üniversite olmalı. Tabi ki asgari ihtiyaclar yerine gelmelidir. Yani yeterli kadro yeterli alan yeterli imkânlar yerine gelmeden üniversite kurarsanız öğrenciye ihanet etmiş olursunuz.
– Öğrencilerin çoğu İstanbul’dan mı?
Hayır, bu oran % 45. Şırnak’tan bile öğrencimiz var. Bunları açıkta bırakmıyoruz. Colony AVM’nin binasını aldık 5 yıldızlı yurt yaptık. Bu döneme yetişecek. Yurt değil yaşam merkezi diyoruz. Çünkü içinde her şey olacak. Ülkemizde 150 noktada tercih merkezimiz var öğrencilerle yüz yüze görüşme imkânı sağlıyoruz.
– Hedefleriniz nedir?
2020 yılında dünyanın ilk 500’ü içinde olmayı hedefliyoruz. Buna imzamı atıyorum.
– Öğrencilere tavsiyeniz ne?
Moda bir meslek seçmesinler. Her zaman var olacak bir mesleği tercih etsinler. Mesela sağlık ve makine… Bunlar eskimez. Hangi şehirde okuyacakları da çok önemli. Şehir vizyonlarına kişiliğine bir şey katmalı.
28 BİN ÖĞRENCİLERİ VAR
200 bin metrekarelik kampüste 28 bin öğrenciye hizmet veren İstanbul Aydın Üniversitesi’nin kampüsünde yok yok. Araştırma merkezleri ve diş hastanesi üniversite dışından gelen ihtiyaçlara cevap veriyor. Tıp fakültesi ve hastanesi ise seneye açılıyor.

Dr. Mustafa Aydin tripled the area of Istanbul Aydın University from 60,000 m2 in 7 years. And now, he recently acquired a nearby shopping mall to built a five-star dormitory for his students.
Dr. Aydin who left the Turkish Armed Forces in 1995 formed the BIL private education courses, which led to a higher education institution and then turned that into a university in 2007. Dr. Aydin, built a university on a 60,000 square meters area in one of the most valuable districts of Istanbul, Florya and after 7 years he tripled the university in size. Dr. Aydin, who built a gigantic 200,000 square meters campus right next to Ataturk Airport, bought the Colony Mall and turned it into a 5 star dormitory for his students. We spoke with Dr. Aydin and then we visited the Florya campus which e built from rubble.
-Your university is rapidly growing every year. What is the reason for this? The students’ demand?
Istanbul Aydin University has been keen on application education since day one. We are helping students reach the very latest information. Our students are required to do mandatory internship in a field related company every week for 1 day of their education. This allows them to learn and be a part of the professional life before they even graduate
-Is there a difference in applicative education in the graduate-undergraduate sense?
No, not at all. We are continuing the same applications in Faculties like Law, Economy and Administrative Sciences, Health Sciences and Fine Arts. We have carried this application to a different level in the past 2 years. We formed a sector council. For example there is a council that is formed by jewelers and academicians in our jewelry design department. The council meets our students every 6 months and listens to the students’ feedback. We don’t think locally. Istanbul Aydin University has 2000 international students and 250 international academicians. From Ivory Coast to Korea to Chile we host students from 74 different countries. We send 500 students and academicians to foreign countries every year.
-Does sending the students to foreign countries cost the student at all?
There are some programs that do cost the students slightly, and there are some that do not cost them at all…For example if the Erasmus budget isn’t enough, then the university will supplement the student. The university covers all of the summer school. We have a international program for any student with any budget.
-You say, “”We have the highest number of students than any other foundation university””. Why do students prefer IAU? Is it cheaper?
Istanbul Aydin University’s fees are among the top 5 in the foundation universities. Our university isn’t cheap. Our university received 160,000 applications in 2013. Our departments are designed by the sector needs, meaning that our students are studying current professionals. We have cooperation agreements with the top 500 universities in the world and have a partnership with about 400 universities. We have 14 research centers. Universities have to raise people, teaching them of their national history. Every year we have over 800 activities meaning we are raising our students in the social and the cultural sense as well. You cannot dictate your own politics here. Neither the student nor the teacher. We are a university which parents can entrust their children with confidence.
-There are 179 universities. The competition rose along with the number. How long do you think this system will continue?
Universities have to compete. Otherwise they cannot be successful. 40 million people are studying. For 40 million people to study there has to be 250 universities. More universities needs to be opened. If you open a university without enough staff and enough space for the students to study, you will be betraying the students.
-Are most of the students from Istanbul?
No, this percentage is 45%. We even have a student from Sirnak. We provide accommodation options to our students. We turned Colony Mall into a 5 star student dormitory. It will be finished this semester. We don’t call it a dormitory, we call it a living center. Because there will be everything in it.
-What are your aims?
We plan to be in the top 500 by the year 2020. That is my promise.
-What are some advice you give to the students?
Do not pick a fashionable career. They should pick a career that will always be there. Health or engineering for example…these don’t get old. Which city they will study is also very important. The city vision should add something to their personalities.
HE HAS 28,000 STUDENTS
There is everything you could ever need in the 200,000 square meter campus which hosts 28,000 students of Istanbul Aydin University. The research centers and the dentistry hospital answers the needs of the people outside of the university. A Faculty of Medicine and its hospital are opening next year.
